Renowned metalsmith/furniture designer Vivian Beer and blacksmith Elizabeth Brim discuss their creative practices. Beer’s Anchored Candy #7 bench energizes the Gregg lobby.

About the artists:

Vivian Beer maintains a studio in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she has earned a reputation for her bold combinations of industrial materials like steel and concrete in making objects that blur the boundaries between utilitarian furniture and fine art sculptures. She has won the grand prize on Ellen’s Design Challenge, hosted by Ellen Degeneres. Beer holds a BFA in sculpture from Maine College of Art, and has been a resident artist at Penland School of Crafts as well as the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Beer’s sculptural bench, Anchored Candy #7 (steel, automotive finishes, gun bluing patina), energizes the lobby in the new Gregg Museum. It was acquired in 2017 at the annual Penland Auction, thanks to the generous support of Friends of the Gregg donors and members who contributed to the purchase.

 

Elizabeth Brim is a blacksmith best known for incorporating what is traditionally seen as feminine imagery in her highly-crafted ironwork. Though metalworking has long been considered a “man’s medium,” Brim uses forged steel to create stereotypically female objects such as frilly dresses, high heeled shoes, aprons, flowers, and tutus. Her first pair of iron high-heeled shoes, inspired by the fairytale, “Twelve Dancing Princesses,” won first prize at the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America Southeastern Regional conference. Brim recently appeared in the seventh episode of Raw Craft with Anthony Bourdain. She received her MFA in printmaking at the University of Georgia, and is currently an instructor and working artist (in metals) at the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, NC.
