CHECK. IT. OUT.
• For at least 25 years, the Gregg Museum has sponsored the annual beginning of the school year poster sale. Like most everything else, the sale had to shift to a virtual platform this year… but it’s still going through October 10! Visit posterinvasion.shop and use the code NCSTATE2020 for 15% off. Anyone can use the discount code to make a purchase, and sales benefit the Gregg Museum.
• Objects of Intention: Photography of Stephen Althouse. In this new Gregg Museum exhibition, photographer Stephen Althouse showcases powerful and startling images of age-old agricultural implements, providing a visual language used to comment on the human condition.
• Hear the NC State Jazz Orchestra on Soundcloud! Directed by Dr. Wes Parker, “Blue Five Jive” was recorded remotely by students in the NC State Jazz Orchestra during the fall semester of 2020 while classes are all meeting online.
• Something fun to explore! The Gregg Museum has a new search tool that allows you to explore the Gregg’s in-house collections database.
• The delightful New York-based choreographer Monica Bill Barnes – noted for finding humor in our awkward, everyday triumphs and failures – conducted workshops with NC State Dance Program students in 2016 and again in 2019. The 2019 visit included setting a dance piece, All the Things We Do, on students in the State Dance Company, and it was performed as part of the fall concert last November. Monica returned (virtually) for a company class in April and taught a master class in August. Her company had been scheduled to premiere The Running Show for the 2020 American Dance Festival season. From September 30 through October 4, ADF is sharing Keep Moving, an online performance that evolved from the canceled premiere.
• The Crafts Center will resume its regular fall in-person class programming (following Phase 2.5 requirements) beginning October 1. The Crafts Center also has a full line-up of online classes and events.
IN THE NEWS
• News from the Provost: Meet the 2020-2021 Provost’s Faculty Fellows. Dan Monek of Music has been selected for the second cohort of provost faculty fellows.
• The News & Observer: IBMA World of Bluegrass set for virtual event. Two performances in the now-virtual festival are by artists involved with Arts NC State in fall 2019. Last year, Balsam Range performed at World of Bluegrass joined by 13 NC State orchestra students, led by Dr. Peter Askim. This year, Balsam Range will be performing in the 31st annual Bluegrass Music Awards Show that will be broadcast on October 1. Amythyst Kiah, presented by NC State LIVE at the Pour House last year, will be part of the October 3 Shout & Shine Showcase that celebrates the diversity in bluegrass and traditional music’s roots.
That’s it for this week, folks. Be safe, wear your face covering, wash your hands, support our students, and embrace our fall 2020 arts experiences at NC State!
