University Theatre Open House. 4 – 6 p.m. Thompson Hall.

Drop in to meet the staff and students of UT, and tour the theaters, the scenic, costume and lighting shops. All are welcome here. Get your questions answered while exploring the many ways you can get involved throughout the year. New this year: Arts NC State will have an information table to answer your questions about the Student Art Sale and Creative, Performing, and Visual Art Awards.

Friday, August 23

The Gregg Museum: Pollinator Census. 11:30 a.m. 

Learn about Bee Campus USA and the importance of pollinators. Experience identifying pollinators through observation and help collect pollinator data. Learn more about programs at the Gregg.

NC State LIVE Presents: The Second City. 7:30 p.m. Stewart Theatre.

This beloved comedy troupe from Chicago launched the careers of Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Keegan-Michael Key and more, and will teach a free improv class for students. NC State students will have first access to tickets and receive free t-shirts! Tickets go on sale to students on August 19 before going on sale to the general public on August 21.

Saturday, August 24

Packapalooza™: 2-10 p.m. Hillsborough Street.

Visit the Packapalooza Arts Zone at Hillsborough and Pouge Street, where we will host interactive activities and performances from the amazing student acapella and dance organizations. New this year: be a part of a ridiculously fun Improv Everywhere mp3 experiment near the Belltower and mainstage from 7-7:30 p.m. .

Wednesday and Thursday, August 28 & 29

Fall 2024 Dance Faculty Concert: Aug. 28 and 29. 7 p.m. Titmus Theatre.

Presented by the Department of Performing Arts and Technology, this concert will feature works by Amy Beasley, Autumn Mist Belk, Brianna Forbes and Tara Z. Mullins and the newest member of our faculty, Allison Beaty. Tickets will be available soon through Ticket Central.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS

Material Messages: The Tales That Textiles Tell explores how different cultures communicate both similar and distinct messages through their particular cloth making traditions and reveals the depth and breadth of the artistic visions of these multicultural makers.

In BABENGA – The Sacred Forest, Cameroonian artist Jean Michel Dissake’s sculptural works use found and recycled materials to represent a balance between nature and technology.

Drawing from the Gregg Museum’s collections of over 54,000 objects, Selections from the Collectionsdisplays a sampling of the many different kinds of art in its holdings.

AUDITIONS

University TELETYPE and MR. BURNS Orientations and Auditions: Aug 27-29, 7 p.m.

Auditions are open to all currently enrolled NC State students regardless of gender, race, ability or identity. You do not have to be taking a theater class to audition for productions.

The Department of Performing Arts and Technology is holding several music and dance program auditions during Wolfpack Welcome Week. Learn more about performance groups and auditions on campus.

Aca Popsicles: August 18. 1-4 p.m. Stafford Commons

Students are invited to join all of NC State’s a cappella groups – Acappology, Chordination, Grains of Time, Ladies in Red and Wolfgang – to learn more about their upcoming auditions and get a free popsicle. Learn more about a cappella auditions.

Poster Invasion Sale: August 16-23. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Talley Student Union.

The Gregg Museum’s annual sponsored poster sale with Poster Invasion is back. The eight-day sales event will take place outside Talley Student Union under the overhang. Poster Invasion is a 100% woman-owned business that offers selections in many types of art prints and popular images. The sales event will feature young rising visual artists. Proceeds will benefit the Gregg Museum.

Challenging Times Series: Select dates September through December. 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Crafts Center teams up with the Gregg Museum of Art & Design and Arts NC State to offer a series of workshops to promote stress reduction during the election season. Registration is open now and required.

DASA: Sculpting and Scanning

A collaboration between Blake Kennedy, the manager of the Clay Studio and Jacob Jones of the Material Science and Engineering Department for an Envisioning Research contest is a further example of the connections between STEM and the arts at NC State.

DASA: Packapalooza Returns to Pack Hillsborough Street

On Saturday, Aug. 24 from 2-10 p.m., the annual Packapalooza block party and street festival returns to pack Hillsborough Street and cap off Wolfpack Welcome Week. This year’s event will feature over 300 vendor booths, a closing concert from indie rock/pop band The Rescues and a participatory audio adventure from Improv Everywhere.

DASA: Sculpting the Future

Jane Kim, a long time participant in NC State’s Clay Studio, created the CJ Kim Clay Studio Excellence Fund, named for her mother, to help the Clay Studio continue to expand and grow moving forward.
